This book results from a decade of dealing with difficulties often met by graduate students--serving as instructors or teaching assistants--pursuing qualifications to become college teachers themselves. The author taught a course on the problems of college teaching with students from all disciplines, and the experiences therein have had enormous influence on the resulting text. The first section deals with basic problems: purpose, offering, the student, intellectual freedom, and motivation. The second defines and analyzes twenty-four procedures for classroom use. The last section addresses problems encountered as a practicing college instructor: evaluation of teaching and learning, counseling of students, and practical help for qualification, compensation, and advancement. The author hopes that the subjects addressed will assist beginners as they launch their careers.
