Collection consists of source material Robert Bruce used in researching and writing his book the Fighting Norths and Pawnee Scouts: Narratives and Reminiscences of Military Service on the Old Frontier published by the Nebraska State Historical Society in 1932. Included within the collection is correspondence with Luther North concerning his experiences with the Pawnee Scouts, articles by Bruce, photographs of Indians, military records pertaining to the Pawnee Scouts, and material relating to the Dull Knife Battle of 1876. Also included are journal pages containing entries for troop provision on the back of which are listings of how the various states voted in the Lincoln-McClellan election of 1864, and the congressional voting record for the ratification of the abolishment of slavery.

James Bruce (1768-1822) married Lucracia (Lucy) Gaines in 1786 in Culpeper County, Virginia, and later moved to Bedford County, Tennessee. Descendants lived in Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Oregon and elsewhere.
