Rex Gummi
Rex Gummi is a modal jazz composition with a medium tempo funk groove for trumpet, alto saxophone, piano, bass and drums. However, the horn parts can be played by any instruments (2 saxophones, 2 trumpets, flutes, etc.) permitting the range is suitable for each instrument. All instrument parts are included and can either be cut out or photocopied from the book for individual performers. The score is presented in concert key to make transposing of substitute horn parts easier. Parts for trumpet and alto saxophone are, of course, transposed. Difficulty level for the given instruments is medium to advanced, simply because of the higher notes in the melody. However, it is a great piece for beginning improvisers, since the 20 bar tune is written in the D Dorian mode (8 bars), E Dorian (8 bars), and then returns to D Dorian (4 bars). Solo space is given to each horn player and pianist. For each soloist there is a written background accompanying his/her last chorus.
