The book, a character-driven suspense novel, is set in Manhattan during the late '60s at the Living Foundation, an anti-Vietnam War group that some see as a cult. Fran Dorflinger, a peace activist, and Paul Spurgeon, an undercover FBI agent with a passion for poetry, both join the Foundation as part of an effort to save the country. The way they define that term, however, is hardly the same. Fran wants to bring an end to the war, while Paul wants to bring an end to the Foundation.
