Political and administrative institutions cannot be understood unless one knows who is operating them and for whose benefit they function. In the first volume of this history, Mousnier analyzes such institutions in light of the prevailing social, economic, and ideological structures and shows how they shaped life in 17th- and 18th-century France. He traces the changing role of monarchical government, showing how it emerged over two centuries and why it failed. In a society divided by hierarchical social groups, conflicts among lineages, communities, and districts became inevitable. Aristocratic disdain, ancestral attachment to privileges, and autonomous powers looked upon as rights, made civil unrest, dislocation, and anarchy endemic. Mousnier examines this contention between classes as they faced each other across the institutional barriers of education, religion, economic resources, technology, means of defense and communication, and territorial and family ties. He shows why a monarchical state was necessary to preserve order within this fragmented society. Though it was intent on ensuring the survival of French society and the public good, the Absolute Monarchy was unable to maintain security, equilibrium, and cooperation among rival social groups. Discussing the feeble technology at its disposal and its weak means of governing, Mousnier points to the causes that brought the state to the limits of its resources. His comprehensive analysis will greatly interest students of the ancien régime and comparativists in political science and sociology as well.

This title provides the fundamental bases for developing turbulence models on rational grounds. The main different methods of approach are considered, ranging from statistical modelling at various degrees of complexity to numerical simulations of turbulence. Each of these various methods has its own specific performances and limitations, which appear to be complementary rather than competitive. After a discussion of the basic concepts, mathematical tools and methods for closure, the book considers second order closure models. Emphasis is placed upon this approach because it embodies potentials for clarifying numerous problems in turbulent shear flows. Simpler, generally older models are then presented as simplified versions of the more general second order models. The influence of extra physical parameters is also considered. Finally, the book concludes by examining large Eddy numerical simulations methods. Given the book’s comprehensive coverage, those involved in the theoretical or practical study of turbulence problems in fluids will find this a useful and informative read.

In 1868, Jarmon, a young African boy, and his sisters Kindra and Karla struggle to live after the death of their parents. It is believed that the curse has caused numerous mysterious deaths of the previous owners of the diamonds. One hundred years later, Grant Powers purchases the diamonds to have made into a thirty-fifth wedding anniversary gift for his wife. In order to save the political life of Grant Powerss brother, Grant and Marianne Powers agree to adopt and raise the illegitimate child of Grants brother. While vacationing the diamond ring is stolen, and the Powers are killed in an automobile accident. The caregiver simply keeps the child and raises her as her own. The true identity of the child and the eventual recovery of the stolen diamond leads to the final removal of the curse.
