Undertaking Qualitative Research With Ethnic Minority Groups
This case study outlines some of the data collection challenges our research team faced when conducting research with ethnic minority groups. A pilot exploratory study was conducted to investigate the medication management experiences of caregivers from ethnic minority groups as they care for a family member living with dementia. Three focus groups and seven semi-structured individual interviews were carried out over a 4-month period in 2012 in the Illawarra region, a multicultural, urban area south of Sydney, Australia. This case study outlines the way in which the research plan evolved as unforeseen practical challenges were encountered in the field. The lessons learned are written from the perspective of a novice student researcher. They would be useful for others who have little research experience and who are considering conducting qualitative research with ethnic minority groups, including participants who do not speak English. Despite the extra challenges presented by language, the outcome of this project demonstrates that it is possible to work around these, on a small budget, and gather rich data from people who do not often have the opportunity to have their voices heard.

Relentless Reformer
Relentless Reformer
Josephine Roche (1886–1976) was a progressive activist, New Deal policymaker, and businesswoman. As a pro-labor and feminist member of Franklin D. Roosevelt's administration, she shaped the founding legislation of the U.S. welfare state and generated the national conversation about health-care policy that Americans are still having today. In this gripping biography, Robyn Muncy offers Roche’s persistent progressivism as evidence for surprising continuities among the Progressive Era, the New Deal, and the Great Society. Muncy explains that Roche became the second-highest-ranking woman in the New Deal government after running a Colorado coal company in partnership with coal miners themselves. Once in office, Roche developed a national health plan that was stymied by World War II but enacted piecemeal during the postwar period, culminating in Medicare and Medicaid in the 1960s. By then, Roche directed the United Mine Workers of America Welfare and Retirement Fund, an initiative aimed at bolstering the labor movement, advancing managed health care, and reorganizing medicine to facilitate national health insurance, one of Roche’s unrealized dreams. In Relentless Reformer, Muncy uses Roche’s dramatic life story—from her stint as Denver’s first policewoman in 1912 to her fight against a murderous labor union official in 1972—as a unique vantage point from which to examine the challenges that women have faced in public life and to reassess the meaning and trajectory of progressive reform.

Long-term Vegetation Change in the Cape of Good Hope Section of Table Mountain National Park, in Response to Climate, Fire and Land Use
Climate change, fire and land use are known threats to biodiversity and are predicted to have a major impact on the Cape Floristic Region of South Africa over the next fifty years. This study investigated long-term (1966-2012) changes in the vegetation of the Cape of Good Hope Section of Table Mountain National Park in response to 20th century changes in climate, fire and land use. Climate variables and fire history were assessed over the last 100 years using linear regression, segmented regression and GIS analyses. Seventy eight repeat photographs were taken at stratified points set out across the reserve and changes in total vegetation cover and the cover of major growth forms (broad leaved shrubs, proteoids, ericoids and restioids) within three main vegetation types (Dune Asteraceous Fynbos, Restioid Fynbos and Proteoid Fynbos) were assessed. Transition matrices were used to investigate the extent of vegetation change likely over the next fifty years. In a separate study changes in the number of individuals as well as the cover of several Proteaceae species (Mimetes fimbriifolius, Leucospermum conocarpodendron and Leucadendron spp.) were also investigated using the repeat photographs.
