Today, the rapid advances in society and science, especially the great strides in social communication, have impacted the live of human beings, particularly the children and young people in Vietnam. Many individuals have established for themselves ways of how to exist, to act, to think, their presence in space, ways of how to get acquainted with modern times, the ways to read, to speak, to write, to entertain themselves, to work as well as how to create new idioms in behavior, dialogue and communication. Because of these influences, many good traditions in the families such as the behavior between parents and their children, between the new and old generations, and the intercommunication among human being have been disregarded in the society; in particular, the relationship between childern and young people and their belief in God has been neglected seriously. The Pope, Benedict XVI, in his introduction to the Youth Catechism of the Catholic Church (YOUCAT), admits that "the community of faith has been wounded recently through the attacks of the evil one, through the penetration of sin itself into the interior, into the heart of the Church", at the same time the Pope invites the young people saying "You yourselves are the Body of Chirst, the Church! Bring the undiminished fire of your love into this Church whose countenance has so often been disfigured by man. Regarding this situation, the Pope calls on the young people to maintain their faith by studying catechism; he compares the faith looks like the "pearl of great value" for which you must give everything to get it. So, the Pope begs young people: "Study Catechism with passion and perseverance. Make a sacrifice of your time for it! Study it in the quiet of your room; read it with a friend, form study groups and networks; share with each other on the Internet." To carry out the admonition of Pope Benedict XVI, the researcher thinks that great emphasis should be placed on the communicative role of the catechist in the catechetical ministry in the Vietnamese Church of today and in the diocese of Nha Trang in particular. The catechetical ministry is of vital importance in teaching catechism to children and young people as it communicates the value of the Gospel to them through social communication and tailored to the consciousness, ideas and actions of the children and young people of today's society. In this study, the researcher will present, analyze and reflect on the documents of the Magisterium, the teachings of the Bishop's Conference in Vietnam and the program for Catechists in the Diocese of Nha Trang, as well as he gives suggestions of how to use means of contemporary technology in teaching in otder to enrich the communicative role of catechists in catechetical ministry, especially in teaching catechism to the children and young people in the Diocese of Nha Trang today.

Achievement in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is a marker of racial inequality. Despite making up 13 percent of the U.S. populace, Black representation in STEM education and the STEM workforce is far from equitable. A reversal of this trend, however, exists at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), where HBCU graduates represent nearly 18 percent of STEM baccalaureate degrees awarded to Black students. Through a multi-site case study of STEM education at four HBCUs, I interviewed students, faculty and administrators involved in services and programs (i.e. undergraduate research, mentoring) specific to supporting students in the gateway courses. Validation Theory and Science Identity Theory were used to inform the overall design--collection and analysis of data--of the study. I found that these services make a meaningful difference in the achievement of students in STEM by providing them with sound relationships and effective study skills, embedded within a culture of family, that help them overcome the challenges associated with the gateway courses. This difference can also be attributed to the multiple roles that faculty plays outside the classroom to address the challenges that externally bear on their students' achievement. By understanding how these four HBCUs have helped their students overcome this critical stage in the STEM educational pipeline, findings help identify salient practices and strategies that encourage minority student learning and persistence that could be informative to other minority serving institutions and majority institutions struggling to support these student populations. Lastly, this study also demonstrates the ongoing importance of HBCUs in improving minority access to opportunities in the STEM workforce.

Western observers have long considered communism to be synonymous with Vietnam’s modern historical experience. Eager to make sense of the North Vietnamese victory in the Vietnam War, scholars and journalists have spilled much ink on the history of Vietnamese communists. But this preoccupation has obscured the diversity of ideas and experiences that defined Vietnam in the twentieth century, in which communism represented just one of many tendencies. Building a Republican Nation in Vietnam, 1920–1963, posits that republicanism shaped modern Vietnam no less profoundly than communism. Republicans championed representative government, the universal rights of man, civil liberties, and the primacy of the nation. These ideas infused the thinking of Vietnamese reformers, dissidents, and revolutionaries from the 1900s onward, including many men and women who went on to lead the struggle for independence. Republicanism was also one of the chief inspirations for the establishment of the Republic of Vietnam (also known as South Vietnam) in 1955. This interdisciplinary volume brings together eleven essays by historians, political scientists, literary scholars, and sociologists, who make use of fresh sources to study the development of republicanism from the colonial period to the First Republic of Vietnam (1955–1963). The introduction by coeditors Nu-Anh Tran and Tuong Vu critically analyzes the existing scholarship on the First Republic, explains how the concept of republicanism can illuminate developments in the Saigon-based state, and situates the regime in a comparative context with South Korea. Peter Zinoman’s chapter reviews the historiography on republicanism and modern Vietnam and heralds the arrival of the “republican moment” in the field of Vietnam studies. Several chapters by Nguyễn Lương Hải Khôi, Martina Thucnhi Nguyen, and Yen Vu examine the transformation of republican ideas. Nu-Anh Tran and Duy Lap Nguyen explore competing concepts of democracy and the factional politics of the First Republic. The essays by Jason Picard, Cindy Nguyen, Hoàng Phong Tuấn, Nguyễn Thị Minh, and Y Thien Nguyen analyze nation- and state-building efforts in the 1950s and 1960s. Collectively, the essays give voice to Vietnamese republicans, from the ideas they espoused to the institutions they built and the legacies they left behind.
