The Indian Chief?is a classic example of Mary Martha Sherwood?s writing. The story is evangelical in nature and contains scenes of religious conversion. The tale begins when a small English boy, George, meets Cora, a Native American girl. Soon after their meeting, George goes with Cora into the woods. Together, Cora and George visit Cora?s Native American tribe and her sick mother. Members of the tribe are kind to George and dress him in traditional Native American garb. One day, George sees a bird soaring up to the sky and makes a reference to Jesus Christ. Befuddled, the Native Americans ask George who Jesus Christ is. George explains his religion to the Native Americans, and in his own way, converts Cora and her tribe to Christianity. Content in his good deed, George returns to his parents. The story presents George as an evangelical figure who enlightens the Native Americans to Christian teachings, making their lives better than they were before. It was Sherwood?s hope that?The Indian?Chief and stories like it would inspire others to become Christian missionaries. This edition of?The Indian Chief?includes several illustrations to accompany the story.

Throughout her career, Mary Martha Sherwood attempted to write stories that would appeal to the minds of children. This book deals with an event common to many children: visiting?grandparents. Though Joseph and his brother Robert get into mischief while visiting with their grandparents, once they ask for redemption, all is well again.

Mary Martha Sherwood frequently wrote about orphans and religion in her fictional works. In?Memoirs of?Sergeant?Dale, both play a big part in the plot. The novel tells of Sgt. Dale as he travels from the East Indies back to England with his biological daughter and his newly adopted daughter, Mary.
