This research developed an ArcGIS Python model that extracts polygons from aerial imagery and assigns each polygon a vegetation type based on a modified set of landcover classes from the Southwest Regional Gap Analysis Project. The model showed an ability to generate polygons that accurately represent vegetation community boundaries across a large landscape. The model is for use by the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire, and State Lands to assist in the preparation of forest management plans. The model was judged useful because it was easy to use, it met a designated 50% threshold of useable polygons, and it met a designated 50% threshold of vegetation class assignment accuracy.

In 2003, the Systems Engineering and Analysis students were tasked to develop a system of systems conceptual solution to provide force protection for the Sea Base conceptualized in the 2002 Expeditionary Warfare study. The Systems Engineering and Analysis Team used the Systems Engineering and Management process as the primary methodology to complete this multidisciplinary task. Survivability was identified as the most critical factor for evaluating the protection of the Sea Base and its transport assets. Threats to the Sea Base were reviewed, analyzed, and prioritized. System design and analysis focused on preliminary analyses of various sensors, search concepts, and weapons. These preliminary analyses identified capability gaps that were translated into functional concepts and proposed architectures for detailed modeling and analysis. These proposed architectures were identified as either Point or Distributed. In order to adequately determine the relative performance of the proposed architectures generated by the team, a thorough and systematic design of experiments was developed and applied in the Naval Simulation System and EXTEND. Based on the results obtained, the Systems Engineering and Analysis Team determined that a Distributed Sensor and Weapons architecture would significantly increase the survivability of future Expeditionary Warfare forces.

Abstract: The purpose of this prospective, randomized, double-blind study was to determine ibuprofen versus ibuprofen/acetaminophen usage for postoperative endodontic pain in symptomatic patients with a pulpal diagnosis of necrosis experiencing moderate-to-severe preoperative pain. Additionally, we recorded escape medication usage. Seventy-one adult patients presenting for emergency endodontic treatment with a symptomatic maxillary or mandibular tooth with a pulpal diagnosis of necrosis with a radiolucent area and moderate to severe pain participated in this study. The patients were randomly divided into two groups blinded to both the doctor and patient by random assignment and numerical coding. An emergency debridement of the tooth was completed with hand and rotary instrumentation. At the end of the appointment, the patients were given either 600 mg ibuprofen or 600 mg ibuprofen combined with 1000 mg acetaminophen (blinded to both the operator and patient). Patients also received a 6 day diary to be completed after anesthesia wore off and every morning for five days. Patients were asked to record pain and symptoms and the number of pain medications taken. Patients received escape medication if the study medication was not controlling their pain. Postoperative data was analyzed by Randomization Test and Step-down Bonferroni method of Holm. There were average decreases in pain levels and analgesic usage over time for the ibuprofen and ibuprofen/acetaminophen groups, but there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups for analgesic usage or escape medication usage. Approximately 20% of patients in both groups required escape medication.
