This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 13th Iberoamerican Congress on Pattern Recognition, CIARP 2008, held in Havana, Cuba, in September 2008. The 93 revised full papers presented together with 3 keynote articles were carefully reviewed and selected from 182 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on signal analysis for characterization and filtering, analysis of shape and texture, analysis of speech and language, data mining, clustering of images and documents, statistical pattern recognition, classification and description of objects, classification and edition, geometric image analysis, neural networks, computer vision, image coding, associative memories and neural networks, interpolation and video tracking, images analysis, music and speech analysis, as well as classifier combination and document filtering.

Esta obra es una nueva edición de libro original Vacuna a vacuna, de la AEV. La obra pretende ser, en cada nueva edición, un texto de actualización de la anterior, para así permitir al lector conocer la información crítica y actual sobre las vacunas disponibles de uso más habitual en España y los últimos avances en materia de seguridad vacunal. También se incluyen nuevos capítulos, como el dedicado al bicentenario de la Real Expedición Filantrópica de la Vacuna y el homenaje de la AEV a Josep Salvany, ¿Cómo funcionan las vacunas?, Vacunaciones en grupos de riesgo y Vacunología de índole social, que hacen que la obra ofrezca textos inéditos adicionales a las actualizaciones. La 4a edición ha contado con la dirección de María José Álvarez Pasquín y José Antonio Forcada Segarra, que, además de dirigir la obra, también han supervisado los textos originales tanto de los nuevos capítulos como de los anteriores, haciendo una revisión y actualización de los existentes de la 3a edición. En el libro se ha mantenido la titularidad original de cada capítulo, figurando el nombre del autor o autora que lo escribió para las ediciones precedentes. El libro que se presenta es un manual o guía de consulta fácil, que permite informar al personal sanitario y a todo aquel que desee conocer más sobre aspectos concretos de las distintas vacunas disponibles y autorizadas por la Administración Sanitaria. El libro también informa sobre la propia enfermedad contra la que protege cada vacuna, conociendo los cuadros clínicos y su prevalencia, aportando datos actualizados de gran utilidad para la toma de decisiones. A través de este libro, el lector podrá ampliar sus conocimientos sobre las vacunas a partir de una fuente fiable. Este libro garantiza que la información consultada proviene de autores expertos y con información basada en evidencia científica. Únicamente los libros que en su información dispongan del aval científico, como es el caso de este que cuenta con autores de la Asociación Española de Vacunología (AEV), permitirán al lector encontrar información contrastada y con rigor científico.

La Universidad se encuentra en pleno progreso desde su tiempo cero; de hecho, halla su carta de naturaleza en la necesidad de mejorar el medio que la nutre y por y para el que existe: la sociedad. La calidad intelectual queda refrendada mediante la rigurosa implantación del habitual proceso garante, basado en la revisión o arbitraje por pares ciegos (peer review) de estos capítulos, sin renunciar a la más antigua tradición universitaria que obliga al opositor de lo publicado, a soportar el peso de la prueba. Este doble modelo de evaluación, a priori y a posteriori, garantiza la calidad del contenido de los textos de esta colección. Pertenecer a la Academia, y en ello radica orgullosamente su valía, supone que todos sus miembros responden a una ambición irrenunciable: mostrar que el conjunto de sus trabajos conforma la vanguardia científica internacional. Islanders and Empire examines the role smuggling played in the cultural, economic, and socio-political transformation of Hispaniola from the late sixteenth to seventeenth centuries. With a rare focus on local peoples and communities, the book analyzes how residents of Hispaniola actively negotiated and transformed the meaning and reach of imperial bureaucracies and institutions for their own benefit. By co-opting the governing and judicial powers of local and imperial institutions on the island, residents could take advantage of, and even dominate, the contraband trade that reached the island's shores. In doing so, they altered the course of the European inter-imperial struggles in the Caribbean by limiting, redirecting, or suppressing the Spanish crown's policies, thus taking control of their destinies and that of their neighbors in Hispaniola, other Spanish Caribbean territories, and the Spanish empire in the region.

Studies of the trade between the Atlantic World and Asia during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries typically focus on the exchanges between Atlantic European countries – especially Portugal, the Netherlands and England – and Asia across the Cape route. In The Atlantic World and the Manila Galleons. Circulation, Market, and Consumption of Asian Goods in the Spanish Empire, 1565-1650, José L. Gasch-Tomás offers a new approach to understanding the connections between the Atlantic World and Asia. By drawing attention to the trans-Pacific trade between the Americas and the Philippines, the re-exportation of Asian goods from New Spain to Castile, and the consumption of Chinese silk, Chinese porcelain and Japanese furnishings in New Spain and Seville, this book discloses how New Spanish cities and elites were main components of the spread of taste for Asian goods in the Spanish Empire. This book reveals how New Spanish family and commercial networks channelled the market formation of Asian goods in the Atlantic World around 1600.
