Der Überlebensakrobat
Memoirs of a Jew born in 1924 in Vienna. In 1938 he fled with his mother and grandparents through Germany to Paris, where his father had already managed to obtain immigrant status; the rest of the family had to live as refugees, without papers. They moved to Lyon and later to Clermont-Ferrand. In May 1940 Hecht's father was drafted into the French army, while he and his mother were arrested and transported to Gurs, where they were separated. After two weeks Hecht infiltrated into the women's camp, where he first lived disguised as a girl; later he had a "laissez-passer", which allowed him to move between the two camps and enabled him and his mother to escape on 25 June 1940. In August 1940 they met with his demobilized father in Clermont-Ferrand, and later hid in Lyon. In August 1942 they managed to cross into Switzerland and were interned in various camps. After the war Hecht returned to Vienna.
