History of the firm J. C. Godeffroy and Son, founded in 1766 by Jean Cesar Godeffroy in Hamburg, Germany. He descended from the Huguenot Cesar Godeffroy of La Rochelle, France who emigrated to Müncheberg Mark, Brandenburg, Prussia after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. Johann Cesar VI (1813-1885) oversaw the expansion of the company's overseas operations until its collapse in 1879. Includes pedigree of the Godeffroy family and biographies of persons who went on scientific expeditions to collect specimens for Johann Cesar VI's museum: Amalie Dietrich (1821-1891), Jan Stanislaus Kubary (1846-1896), and Andrew Garrett (1823-1887), who explored Australia, the Palau Islands, Hawaii, Samoa, the Cook Islands, the Marquesas and Society Island groups.
