The first book to explore the extraordinary musical life and remarkable paintings of one of America's greatest ever songwriters. Best known for having written and produced some of the seminal records of American popular culture--from 'Big Girls Don't Cry' for the Four Seasons to 'Silence is Golden' for the Tremeloes and 'Lady Marmalade' for LaBelle--Bob Crewe was a multifaceted artist for whom a passion for painting and the visual arts provided a lifelong counterbalance to music. Collected here are more than 80 of Bob Crewe's artworks, stretching from his first forays into abstract expressionism in the 1950s and 1960s to more complex, tactile compositions made on his full-time return to painting in the 1990s--accompanied by archival images and ephemera that reflect Crewe's simultaneous contribution to popular music. Essays by Jessica May and Peter Plagens explore the development of an artist whose influences ranged from Rauschenberg and Johns to Warhol and Bacon; legendary record producer Andrew Loog Oldham captures the period of radical experimentalism in which Crewe wrote many of the most memorable songs in the canon of modern pop; and Donald Albrecht's introduction ties together the many complementary aspects of Crewe's personal and creative lives.

The book will be the most comprehensive monograph of Putman's work to date, with individual chapters on 1) hotels and residences, include the famous Morgans Hotel, considered to be the first boutique hotel; 2) commercial interiors and restaurants, such as boutiques for Yves Saint Laurent; 3) offices and exhibition designs--such as her design for Jack Lang, the French Mister of Culture; and 5) and furniture and product designs (Putman is also credited for revival of once-forgotten early Modernist designers such as Eileen Gray, Robert Mallet-Stevens, and Jean-Michel Frank, whose designs she put back into production and used in her famous interiors). Major projects are lavishly illustrated. Major texts include the first serious study of her work by Donald Albrecht as well as texts from Putman herself on luxury, travel, materiality, and other topics.

Explores modern architecture in film sets of the 1920s and 1930s including a comparison of architectural photographs with movie stills. Chapter 1 covers a brief history of modern architecture from 1925 through 1939. Chapter 2 gives an overview of film decor before its designers adopted modernism in the mid-1920s. Chapters 3 and 4 run chronologically through four periods between 1916 and 1939 and chart the first steps, breakthrough, dissemination, and decline of modern architecture in movies. Chapter 5 examines nine specific types of modern film decor.
