This document is Human Resources Development Canada's sustainable development strategy for the period 2004 to 2006. It lists sustainable development goals, objectives, targets, and performance indicators; presents the results of an issue scan and of consultations; provides an assessment of progress made in achieving the goals set out in the 2001-2003 sustainable development strategy.

In its broadest sense, sustainable development is "development that meets the needs of the present, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Human Resources Development Canada's (HRDC) sustainable development strategy focuses on making realistic and pragmatic contributions to improving the environment and enhancing sustainable development.
