Archie Miller Photograph Collection
This collection consists of three leather photograph albums, each containing photographs from the service of the 32nd Infantry Regiment (United States Volunteers) during the Philippine Insurrection. The large album contains photographs covering a variety of subjects: native dwellings and graves, school children, open air markets, fishing Cascos (small boats), and religious services inside Balanga cathedral. Also included are photographs of the United States (U.S.) military encampment outside of Balanga showcasing stables, Soldiers' quarters, the regimental hospital, and the headquarters buildings. American servicemen also are depicted in activities such as the conduct of guard mount, inspections, artillery crewmen manning their mountain gun, and the regimental band. The first of the smaller albums contains untitled photographs that correspond to a hand written index found inside the larger album. This index concludes with the inscription "Taken by F.H.W. Co. E. 32nd Infty U.S.V." Photographs in this album include the daily life of Philippine natives, exterior shots of many Manila churches, interior photographs of Balanga church, scenes of 32nd Infantry (United States Volunteers) on a firing line, and a scene depicting dead Philippine insurgents after an engagement. The second smaller album contains annotated photographs providing Soldiers' names, dates, and locations. These photographs include Cascos in Manila Bay, some transporting U.S. Soldiers and supplies, and landscape shots of the terrain around Balanga. This album also contains photographs of Camp Wallace, 32nd Infantry field tents, and regimental headquarters tent.
