Measuring Economic Well-being of Rural Canadians Using Income Indicators
This paper uses the following indicators to describe the economic well-being of rural Canadians: average & median incomes for families & individuals, national & provincial; proportion of families with income below the low income cut-offs; proportion of families with income below the low income measures; measure of the degree of income inequality (Gini coefficient); correlation of in-migration to a community with the measured incidence of low income in the community; and governmental impact on incomes through transfers & taxes. Most of the income data for the paper has been tabulated from the former Survey of Consumer Finances. The majority of the analysis is presented at the national level, except for incomes which are also presented at the provincial level.
