Telling Stories of Pain and Hope
Telling Stories of Pain and Hope
The histories of South Africa and Ireland have been tumultuous and traumatic. Both countries have experienced political repression, sectarian violence and oppression that still impact the spiritual well-being of people today. Their parallel histories are of colonialism, displacement and division, and a fight for land and sovereignty. Both countries have embarked on a process of healing and reconciliation, yet there is an ongoing struggle for reparation and/or reversal of previous injustices. Recognising that museums of the 21st century have the potential to contribute to catharsis and mutual understanding, this book reflects on selected museums in South Africa and Ireland that commemorate the pain of the past and the hope for the future. The primary focus of the book is the way in which museum guides, curators and managers share their stories and the stories of their ancestors, and the stories of other people’s ancestors who were caught up in the conflict while interweaving the stories of the authors as well. Print edition not for sale in Sub Saharan Africa.

Creating the Curriculum
Creating the Curriculum
Is there an ‘ideal’ primary school curriculum? Who should decide what the curriculum is? Should teachers have autonomy over how they teach? The curriculum is the heart of what teachers teach and learners learn: effective teaching is only possible with an effective curriculum. Yet in spite of its importance, there has been a crisis in curriculum that has been caused in large part by governments assuming direct control over the curriculum, assessment, and increasingly, pedagogy. Creating the Curriculum tackles this thorny issue head on, challenging student and practising primary school teachers to think critically about past and present issues and to engage with a new wave of curriculum thinking and development. Considering curriculum construction and its impact on teaching and learning in the four countries of the UK, key issues considered include: who should decide the curriculum, its aims and its values the extent to which issues in primary education swing back and forth Subjects versus thematic organisation, stages and phases, progression, breadth and balance prescription versus teacher autonomy the key features of effective classroom practice strategies for assessing the whole curriculum how language in the classroom influences curriculum design understanding curricula in the context of children’s social and personal circumstances creativity, curriculum and the classroom. Illustrated throughout with strategies and case studies from the classroom, Creating the Curriculum accessibly links the latest research and evidence with concrete examples of good practice. It is a timely exploration of what makes an effective and meanginful curriculum and how teachers can bring new relevance, motivation and powerful values to what they teach.

And Babies Make Four
And Babies Make Four
Ruth Owen weaves an irresistible story of unexpected passion in the steamy heat of an island paradise. Dr. Noel Revere knows she’s asking for trouble when she volunteers to shepherd two very precious—and very secret—pieces of cargo through the heart of an unspoiled rainforest. The mission is vital to her employer, and there are more than a few superstitious natives who would rather keep her out of their sacred lands. What she doesn’t count on is her guide: a rude, rugged, and yes, ripped former soldier who intends to make her life difficult—something that seems to come to him quite easily. So how can a man this dangerous make her feel so safe? Sam Donovan is hiding here on this isolated island—avoiding the past, avoiding the rules, maybe even avoiding life altogether. Then he’s thrown for a loop: Why on earth is Noel—sorry, Dr. Revere—so damn irresistible to him? Proper, sophisticated, stubborn, she represents every area where he went wrong before. And yet for this woman, he’ll do anything to make things right, even if it means risking life and limb to win her trust . . . and possibly, her heart. Includes a special message from the editor, as well as excerpts from these Loveswept titles: Trying to Score, Flirting with Disaster, and Long Simmering Spring.
