A Model of the Inter-generational Transmission of Educational Success
This report examines the impact of parental education on children's academic outcomes. It builds on previous research on the association between family social class and child development, and the processes of the inter-generational transmission of opportunity. The report describes the inter-relationships between moderating and mediating factors that influence children's outcomes, such as family structure, family size, teenage motherhood, income and poverty, maternal employment, parent mental health and wellbeing, and parenting style. The report concludes with some tentative statements about the moderating effects of education, and the implications for policy and research.
