Warrington Township, located in Bucks County, was officially established in October 1734 and named after a town near Lancashire, England. As the years went on, main roads developed through town, some as part of William Penns highway plan, and the township was divided further into the four villages of Warrington, Neshaminy, Tradesville, and Eureka. Their borders were not well defined but were centered on important crossroads. Each of the villages had its own post office and school. The residents associated themselves with their villages, forming distinct communities. The year 2009 marks Warringtons 275th anniversary. To commemorate this event, the newly formed Warrington Historical Society has assembled the vintage photographs in Warrington as a glance back at the townships rich past, offering a window to a time when the Warrington landscape was made up of endless open space and agriculture was the main industry.

At the time of Warrington Townships founding in 1734, few landowners lived on Bucks Countys fertile soil. The history of the township is one of gradual growth and development. From unbroken wilderness grew small clusters of families forming villages. Warrington consisted of four villages: Warrington, Neshaminy, Pleasantville, and Tradesville. In the mid-1800s, the townships landscape was made up of family farms, with agriculture as the main industry. In the late 1920s, the first small housing developments were built. By the early 1960s, larger housing developments and shopping centers had replaced many farms. Once lined with lush fields of crops and trees, the DoylestownWillow Grove Turnpike/Easton Road/Route 611 has seen the most change throughout time. Historically significant families, including the Barnesses, Coggiolas, Cornells, Craigs, Holberts, Leventhals, Mayers, Pauls, Penroses, Wileys, and Worthingtons, created well-known businesses along this road on which they lived. Today, this thoroughfare has little historic substance to offer its current residents.

This study is a textual and contextual appraisal of the writings of Yorkshire-born Hedley Smith (1909-94) whose depiction of the fictional mill village of Briardale, Rhode Island, captures an early twentieth-century labor diaspora peopled with textile workers. Enraged and embittered at the transformatory experience of his own emigration, Smith used fiction to explore Yorkshire immigrants' culture and stubborn refusal to assimilate, their vital sexuality, and their vivid social customs. As Smith's writings reveal, emigration involves grief and anger, often universally concealed and problematic. Adopting a transnational perspective, Mary H. Blewett links Smith's fictional community to empirical data on the substance of working-class lives both in Yorkshire and in New England's worsted textile industries.
