The breaking up of the barracoons, at the Gallinas river, by Captains Denman and Dunlop, led to the purchase of that territory by the Liberians, who have on many other occasions most efficiently co-operated with the squadrons on the coast for the suppression of the trade in slaves. At the same time that iniquitous traffic is yielding to these combined operations, a very important trade is growing up in its place; already the exports of palm-oil, dye woods and dyes, ivory, gums gold, and other natural productions of that immense continent, are by no means inconsiderable, and the facilities which the soil affords for the cultivation of cotton, coffee, sugar, and numerous other articles, give to this settlement a commercial importance little inferior to that which it possesses in the eyes of the Christian philanthropist.
