Memoirs of a Jew born in Paris in 1929 as François Lévy. The family had been living in France since the 17th century and owned a large hosier's shop in Paris. In 1939 François and his mother fled to the provinces, but returned after the armistice in 1940. In June 1943, François was sent into hiding in Tence under a false identity, and was joined a month later by his mother. His father was arrested in Paris and deported to Auschwitz, where he was gassed upon arrival. François spent the rest of the war in hiding in Chambon-sur-Lignon, ten kilometers from Tence, where he had some family. His mother found refuge in Clermont-Ferrand. After the war mother and son returned to Paris.
