A theology of the New Testament is not an assembling of various proof texts, arranged within the framework of a theological system. Rather, it is the presentation of the historical genesis and gradual growth of New Testament doctrines. The author does directly aim at such a presentation; his purpose is to give an overview of the divergent and vital tendencies in the early Church--the grist of a more systematic biblical theology--as these have been captured and analyzed through the efforts of modern research.
