Originally published in 1875, this memoir depicts daily life during the Civil War, examines key figures of the Confederate army and the women who supported them, and satirizes the financial woes of the South. Diary entries and often-droll anecdotes describe the author's experiences as a soldier on and off the battlefield, as opposed to detailing each military skirmish he encountered.

George Cary Eggleston's frank reflections include portrayals of such well-known Civil War notables as Stonewall Jackson, Jeb Stuart, and Robert E. Lee. Introductory entries recall Virginia's Old Regime prior to the war. The following chapters describe Eggleston's service in the Army of Northern Virginia while the concluding remembrances document the conflict's bitter end.

ABOUT GEORGE CARY EGGLESTON
Renowned writer and Confederate Civil War veteran, George Cary Eggleston (1839-1911) was born in Indiana but eventually moved to Virginia, where he inherited the family plantation. He briefly studied law at Richmond College before entering the Confederate army. After the war, he pursued a writing career. He contributed to such publications as the New York Evening Post and New York World, where he worked under Joseph Pulitzer. Eggleston is also the author of Red Eagle, a Firebird Press book.

ABOUT RANDY BISHOP
Award-winning author Randy Bishop is a Civil War scholar, history teacher at Middleton High School, and adjunct for Jackson State Community College. The six-time recipient of the Teacher of the Year Award was also recognized in Who's Who Among America's Teachers. Bishop earned a bachelor of science from Union University and a master of education from the University of Memphis. In addition to his membership in the Sons of Confederate Veterans, he is involved with the Civil War Preservation Trust and Tennessee Civil War Preservation Association. He is the author of Pelican's Tennessee's Civil War Battlefields: A Guide to Their History and Preservation and The Tennessee Brigade.
