Across the Face of France

This book describes aspects of the liberation of France in 1944. The author, who fought across France with the 134th Infantry, follows their approximate liberation route - from the Normandy beaches, Sainte-Mére Église, and Saint-Lô, through Orléans and Nancy, east to Sarreguemines and the Saar - and then revisits the towns ten and twenty years later. The book is not only a military history but a report on the social, economic, and political reconstruction of postwar France.
