James Thorpe is a retired journalist living on Vancouver Island. A newspaper story prompts him to recall the summer of 1949 in Cobalt, Ontario, when he discovered a mummified body in an abandoned mine. The discovery sets off a chain of events in his own family, and his realization that his assumptions at the time were probably false leads him to reconsider these family relationships, and to attempt a recovery of the truth.
