John Henry Newman, later Cardinal Newman, was a busy pastor, prodigious writer, and was so far ahead of his time in the nineteenth century that he has been called one of the Fathers of the Second Vatican Council. But he was best known in his own time as a spiritual friend. By the example of his life, he encourages the search for God while acknowledging the freedom that the children of God, in good conscience, enjoy.
