Beetles' heads, plant seeds, and crystals -- images from a world that is invisible to the naked eye open a door to a new realm of visual experience. Fährenkemper's documentary, conceptual approach and her "magical realism" embody the photographic tradition of New Objectivity. Her real interest is not the object itself but its precise visual reproduction. The heightened, almost tactile presence of the surface texture achieved with the aid of a scanning electron microscope enables the viewer to experience the sensual qualities of organic or inorganic worlds and the sculptural dimensions of abstract pictorial spaces.
