Epp's diaries are translated and abridged by Harvey L. Dyck. They offer a vivid picture of Mennonite community life in Imperial Russia during a particularly troubled time. Epp was a school teacher, lay minister, farmer, and village secretary in southern Ukraine. Dyck places the diaries in their historical, ethnocultural, social, religious, and political settings.
