A final chapter explores the role of the Nippur Lament in the other literature promulgated in the reign of Isme-Dagan. This suggests that the king's importance as provider of Nippur was a key factor in the ideology by which he attempted to legitimize his rule. Later, Isme-Dagan became memorialized in the canon of Nippur's scribal schools and became an icon of how a king should behave towards the city of Enlil, if he wished to win that god's support in his quest for territorial dominance.
