Thirty-year-old David Freid isn't sure what to do with his life. He hates his job as a clerical assistant at the City University of New York, and his monologues as a stand-up comedian twice a week at Patti's Caf aren't well received. In addition to suffering from chronic prostatitis, he can't find a girl.

The turning point comes when David discovers a photograph of his urologist's daughter, Kara Rosenblum. Despite the fact that she doesn't know he exists, he becomes convinced they are meant to be together. At the same time, an elusive talent scout from Comedy World is expected to make a surprise appearance at the club where David performs. The problem is that nobody knows if the scout is legitimate or not.

In a moment of clarity, David decides that if he can get the urologist's daughter and the talent scout to both show up at his Saturday night gig, he will not only get discovered but win the love of the girl with whom he is obsessed.
