Beye (emeritus classics, City U. of New York) begins with discussions of oral poetry, the poet's world, and poetic technique. Then he examines in turn the Iliad, Odyssey, Argonautica, and Aeneid. The final chapter, on Gilgamesh, has been added to the 1993 edition, published by Cornell University Press, along with an updated list of suggested readings.
