"Finding Owl Canyon, book one of two, is historical fiction set in eastern New Mexico Territory and Colorado. In the 1870's railroads stitched across the continent while paddle-wheel steamboats and stage lines disappeared. Buffalo were hunted to near extinction. Native Americans sought sanctuary in remote areas. Civil War reconstruction faltered. A reverse-wave of "homesteaders" washed back from the Pacific Northwest to claim land in Colorado and other mid-continent states. It was a time of national upheaval, transition, and promise. The book's characters leave a drought-stricken New Mexico village where they had tried to survive - until accused of a crime they didn't commit. Chased by bounty hunters and threatened by locust-ravaged dry lands, they cross a trackless escarpment where they encounter refugees from the Lawrence, Kansas massacre, survive a Comanche attack, find brief refuge in Fort Union, and race winter storms to Denver, capitol city of the newest state in the union. As they travel they find unsuspected strengths and abilities in themselves and in the others."--Page 4 of cover
