His first short story was published in 1955 in Kiwi, the Auckland University literary magazine; by this time he was teaching, but his career as a teacher was shortlived, and he left teaching to become a writer. In 1962 his first novel was published, and he won the Literary Fund's Scholarship in Letters; in 1964 he won the Burns Fellowship, and was able to finish his second novel. He becamne a librarian, writing part-time, mostly short stories. ...
