America the Beautiful

In 1893, Katherine Lee Bates visited Pike's Peak in Colorado. Inspired by the stunning view of"spacious skies" and " purple mountain majesties", she wrote America the Beautiful. This poem first appeared in the Congregationalist - a religious magazine- on July 4, 1895. Eventually, America the Beautiful was set to music by Samuel Augutus Ward.
