Cold Spring Harbor

When the Shepards' car breaks down in pre-World War II New York City, there is set into motion a chain of events that apprently transforms the lives of the Shepards and the Drakes, as Evan and Rachel meet, court, and marry. What Yates so wonderfully and yet so ironically depicts is the betrayal that lurks behind the promise, the disappointment that betrays the dream, as each character plays out a secret scheme, intent on salvation, only to find that every path of escape inevitably leads one back home.
