This work examines the unique contribution of Solon to the genesis of democratic thought. As an Athenian statesman in the 6th century BC, Solon enacted legislative reforms which ended the exclusive political control of the aristocracy in Athens and began a process that culminated in the Athenian democracy of the 6th century. As a poet, Solon is the first Athenian whose compositions have survived from antiquity.
