Young Ruth St. John didn't know she was poor. It was the middle of the depression in rural Illinois, and no one had money. No indoor plumbing or electricity, heat from coal or wood stoves, these were the norm. She was happy in her life. She was young, pretty, healthy and fit. She spent her days in the little one room school, walking two miles each way. The family was always well dressed-her mother was the best seamstress in the county. Her dresses were made from feed and flour sacks on her mother's treadle Singer sewing machine.
