This report has been prepared by researchers from the federal and provincial governments and academia. This assessment builds upon the results presented in the 1997 Canadian Acid Rain Assessment and presents the latest research related to the following: 1) progress towards reducing acid-causing emissions; 2) response of the atmosphere to past, present, and future changes in emissions; 3) new critical load estimates for aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems; 4) effects on forests, soils, aquatic ecosystems, wildlife, and human health; 5) recovery of aquatic ecosystems; 6) linkages to other environmental issues; 7) gaps in our understanding of the issue; and 8) on-going efforts to quantify the costs and benefits associated with reducing acid deposition.
