-When it was first published in 2009, the concept of "yarn bombing" - the art of knitted and crocheted objects as a political act - was brand new. But now it has entered the public zeitgeist, and most people are familiar with the sight of knitting or crochet displayed covertly in public spaces. The concept has also been applied to knitted or crocheted fashion that is used to make a political or cultural statement; perhaps the most famous in recent years was the sea of pink "pussy" hats that appeared at the women's rights rallies shortly after Trump's inauguration.
-This tenth-anniversary edition celebrates how far "yarn bombing" has come. It includes a brand new chapter of yarn bombing examples over the past 10 years, as well as a new foreword by the authors. -The original edition of Yarn Bombing sold over 30,000 copies over three printings and is currently out of print. (Rather than reprint, we and the authors decided to issue this new edition.) It was also featured in a 2011 New York Times article (front page of the fashion & style section): https: //www.nytimes.com/2011/05/19/fashion/creating-graffiti-with-yarn.html -In addition to the pink pussy hats, other infamous yarn bombing examples over the past 10 years that will make it into the book include the full-body knitted suit that was placed over the Wall Street bull statue; Stephen Duneier, a hedge fund manager also known as "the Yarnbomber" whose knitted covers for trees and boulders in the mountains around Santa Barbara, California are created to attract people to the great outdoors, and are not only permitted, but encouraged by the U.S. Forest Service; and a "knitted river" comprised of 100,000 knitted patches that appeared at sites throughout the UK to bring attention to those who lack access to clean water. -The main market for this book is female under the age of 40 (though there is a not insignificant number of male knitters/crocheters/yarn bombers). It should also appeal to those interested in the visual arts and in political and social issues.
