In 1920 American women won the right to vote, after seventy years of dedicated activism as political leaders, grassroots organizers, militants, writers, and orators. In celebrated and unsung roles, the millions of women of the suffrage movement were a crucial link between the antislavery movement from which they emerged and the civil rights movement that followed.
