Heart of Darkness follows seaman Charles Marlow as he recounts his eventful journey up the Congo River and into Congo, located in Central Africa. During the course of Marlow’s travels, he encounters various setbacks, interacts with the locals, and develops a growing fascination with the enigmatic figure of Mr. Kurtz, an ivory trader who seems to exert a mysterious charm over the natives. This book is a tale of imperialism, racism, and contradiction and explores what it really means to call oneself ‘civilized’.
