Twelve Navy harbors in the Continental U.S. require maintenance dredging in excess of 0.1 M cu yd per year. They account for 78% of the Navy's annual 9M cu yd total. Two thirds of the area dredged is located within quiet water berths, typically formed between rows of pile piers. About 87% of the material dredged is mud (silty clay or clayey silt) deposited by estuarine processes. (Author).
