What is the impact on the mental health of a community when an important local industry closes down? How do human service and mental health agencies in the area cope? The authors conducted a series of interviews with roughly one thousand people in an Ohio town after the closure of several steel mills. They analyze the psychological impact of unemployment on different groups of people. They then use all records of local service agencies to evaluate the effectiveness of the response of the human services. A public policy for dealing with plant closures is proposed.

`All levels of students interested in the fields of mental health, urban sociology, social work, and public administration will find this volume worth reading.' --
