Frank Norris was a prominent American novelist and journalist during the Progressive Era. Most of Norris' work centered around the descriptions of people suffering from corrupt corporate monopolies near the turn of the 20th century. Norris' best known novels are McTeague: A Story of San Francisco, The Octopus: A Story of California, and The Pit: A Story of Chicago. McTeague: A Story of San Francisco tells the story of a couple's courtship and marriage. When McTeague is barred from practicing dentistry the relationship between him and his wife quickly descends.
