The Coquette

The Coquette; or, The History of Eliza Wharton was published 1797 and was one of the best-selling novels of its time. A fictionalized account of the story of Elizabeth Whitman, whose infamouse demise was blamed her demise on the fact that she read romance novels, which gave her improper ideas. Foster responded with The Coquette, which provided a sympathetic portrayal of the difficulties faced by middle-class women. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public.
