Searching for Rosanna was inspired by a family legend of Revolutionary War heroism. Rosanna Waters Farrow rescued her three Patriot sons from imminent execution by the British Colonel John Cruger. Or so the story goes. The author's quest to determine the veracity of the tale sparked a journey to the beginnings of colonial America. This family history winds through Jamestown and Bermuda, the Northern Neck of Virginia, and the backcountry of South Carolina. The author's ancestors were ordinary colonists, all of whom lived extraordinary lives. She comes to know them through the history of the times in which they lived. Her family's story is one many Americans share: ancestors who left family, home and country for an uncertain life in a New World.(More)The author learned about Rosanna through her grandmother's application to the Daughters of the American Revolution; coincidentally, her husband's grandmother applied to the DAR also citing Rosanna and her legendary heroism, thus revealing a shared ancestral line. Research took the couple to battlefields and gravesites, which are included in the appendices. Narratives by family members on both sides are included as a gift to future generations.
