South Carolina Naturalists

At the conclusion of an American Association for the Advancement of Science conference held in Charleston in 1850, Dr. A.A. Gould commented, "In science, South Carolina has stood almost alone in the South". Many of the first and best studies of North American flora and fauna were conducted in there.
