On Columbus Day Weekend 2017, Michael Diaz had a kayak accident in the Long Island Sound that resulted with his treading water for the next 17 1⁄2 hours through night, an approaching storm, and drifting some 10 miles between Long Island and Connecticut. The next morning, he climbed up to the ladder of the Green Ledge Lighthouse off Norwalk and signaled to a nearby fishing boat to call for help.
