These seventeen newspaper articles form a sequel to "The Red Badge of Courage." Stephen Crane wrote them on a trip he made early in 1895, about a year after he had completed the novel while it was being considered for book publication. The newspaper syndicate that had published "The Red Badge of Courage" as a serial offered Crane the opportunity to take a lightning tour through the South, the West, and into central Mexico. The resulting dispatches may be uneven as travel sketches, but they contributed to the final polishing of Crane the artist, and the man.
