This study uses data from approximately 22,000 respondents to the 1991, 1992, and 1993 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse. Particular topics explored include: the particular family types that are most highly associated with adolescent substance use, dependence, and the need for treatment; the interaction between gender, race, ethnicity and family structure in substance abuse; the effects of family structure on type and pattern of substance use; and the effect of the gender of the custodial parent on the risk of substance use.
